Texas Tech Fans Can Score With Varsity Jeans and Shorts

Cotton is set to further enhance its positive image among Texas Tech University fans with collegiately-licensed denim jeans and shorts from Varsity Manufacturing Company, a brand owned by Lubbock-based Plains Cotton Cooperative Association (PCCA). The products, made from West Texas denim, feature the Texas Tech logo embroidered on the watch pocket along with other embellishments and currently are available at Red Raider Outfitter's 6th and University location in Lubbock. The jeans and shorts also will be available soon at their Student Union store inside the Dallas Galleria.

"After completing and analyzing our research, we concluded there is a strong market for denim apparel bearing university logos," said PCCA President and CEO Wally Darneille. "We are proud to launch these new products here in Lubbock, and eventually, we will make denim apparel with logos from dozens of universities," Darneille said. The products come in various styles and washes for both men's and women's wear.

"Red Raider Outfitter is extremely honored to help launch Varsity Jeans in the retail marketplace," said Vice President Stephen Spiegelberg. "The fact that the cotton comes right here from our very own farmers makes this product even better, and it's a clever way to showcase the world's best cotton to a large demographic," Spiegelberg continued. "It's also a great way to help support cotton during such a rough growing season, and it could be a silver lining that the farmers and their families can be proud of this year. The quality is second to none, and as we all know, jeans are one of the hardest apparel pieces to get right in terms of the fit, and Varsity Jeans are spot on," he said. "They did an amazing job to make the styles flattering to all body types, and the jeans could easily be classified as a premium. With the quality of cotton, fashion forward washes, and superior fit, I would not be surprised to see these jeans sitting next to Seven and True Religion jeans on the shelves of hip little boutiques in college towns across the nation. Varsity Jeans has scored a touchdown with their jeans."

"The men's jeans are available in a modern fit with a high-fashion finish and silhouette and in a classic fit with a traditional look that everyone loves," Darneille continued. "The women's jeans come in a great looking boot cut with a light indigo shade, and we have a skinny jean in dark denim. Both women's styles are made with a great stretch fabric produced at our American Cotton Growers (ACG) denim mill in Littlefield, Texas, and we have made great looking cuffed shorts for women in two lengths and in light and dark finishes. We will continually develop new and innovative styles each season."

Due to PCCA's total verticality, ACG's denim fabric is cut and sewn at the cooperative's Denimatrix facility in Guatemala which received the prestigious Award for Corporate Excellence from the U.S. State Department in late 2010. The award was presented in recognition of Denimatrix's social responsibility and environmental stewardship.

"We believe there is broad appeal among students, alumni and fans for our collegiately-licensed denim apparel, and we hope they will purchase these jeans and shorts to show their support for Texas Tech and our cotton farmers who are facing a very difficult year due to the drought," Darneille concluded.

PCCA is a farmer-owned cooperative marketing cotton grown in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and New Mexico. In addition to its denim and jeans production, PCCA owns seven cotton warehouses in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
